2019-2020 SEAONC SE3 Committee Structure and Task Groups
The SE3 committee is organized into various task groups to further the mission of the committee, which is to study and promote engagement and equity in structural engineering. Each task group consists of two to four SE3 contributors, and is lead by one (or two) task group leaders.
At each SE3 committee meeting, the leaders of each task group share their goals and ideas for the group.
Here is a brief synopsis of the task groups and their leaders.

Diversity & Inclusion Subcommittee
Hayley Proctor of Wiss Janney Elstner, and Maito Okamoto of Martin/Martin, are co-leading SE3's Diversity & Inclusion Initiative, which kicked off with a launch event in Fall 2019. The focus of this initiative is to expand the conversation around equity & engagement in Structural Engineering to include all facets of diversity, such as race, cultural background, citizenship status, sexual orientation, and religion. |
Mentorship Subcommittee
Sara Rahme of e-Builder and Steve Earl of Forell/Elsesser Engineers are co-leading SE3's mentorship program to bring SEAONC members more access to this career-boosting practice. In addition to planning speed mentoring events, the 2020 committee is focused on logistics and operations for the long-term mentorship program that was launched in the spring of 2019. Sarah Sullivan and Brenna Marcoux will continue to provide support and guidance to Sara and Steve as they are transitioning into their new roles. |
Outreach & Communications Subcommittee
Stephanie Borchers and Hayley Dickson of Forell/Elsesser Engineers and Kate Spiesman are co-leading the committee focused on promoting SE3 initiatives and events, recruiting new committee members, and engaging the national community regarding SE3’s mission. Yoshita Manne of Tipping Structural Engineers will be also contributing content and acting as the blogmaster |
Exit Interviews Subcommittee
Michaella DeRubeis and Steve Earl of Forell/Elsesser Engineers and Karen Vogt-Wilcox of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger will be leading a relatively new committee interest / effort. This involves executing interviews of individuals who have left the structural engineering profession to gain insights and share with the professional community. The plan is to spend the early part of 2020 developing a framework, training a team to execute the interviews, completing them, and then summarizing the experiences in the form of a blog, article or presentation. |
Career Tips | New Committee Initiative
In an effort to make career advice available to people who don’t have access to a mentor, or would like additional career guidance to supplement their current mentoring relationships and activities, the SEAONC SE3 Team is developing a database of career tips on a variety of topics. We are still looking for a volunteer to lead this effort. |
