​SEAONC SE3 Fall 2022 Speed Mentorship Event

Description: The Mentorship task group teamed up with the SEAONC Board to hold the third event in the 2022 SEAONC University Series. This virtual speed mentorship event brought in 14 mentors from throughout the profession to mentor students and young professionals in three 20-minute breakout sessions. 

​SEAONC SE3 and The Business Forum Present: Innovate Your Career

Description: The DEI task group teamed up with the Business Forum to bring together a group of all-star panelists with experience starting their own firms or going off the beaten path within structural engineering. The panelists shared their own stories and tips on how to make your career in structural engineering what you want it to be!

2022 NCSEA Summit - Civil Engineering Pathways Research Presentation

Description: SEAONC SE3 Co-Chairs Priscilla Nguyen and Kaat Ceder presented the work of the SEAONC SE3 Racial Equity task group at the 2022 NCSEA Summit in Chicago, IL. The presentation included data from both the Racial Demographics of Civil Engineering Pathways in California report and CE Student Survey topic briefs, all of which can be found on the publications page.

SEAONC SE3: The Engineer's Role in Equitable Design Panel Event

SEAONC SE3 Speed Mentorship Summer Event

Description: This mentoring event is open to students and engineers with 8 years of experience of less. Participants will meet with 1-2 mentors in each of the three 15-minute breakout sessions. Each breakout session will consist of focused questions. Bring your best virtual background and beverage of choice.

SEAONC SE3 2021-2022 Long-Term Firm Leaders DEI Cohort Program: February 2021 Kick-Off Meeting

Description: The SEAONC SE3 Committee is committed to equipping our membership for and facilitating the difficult but necessary conversations on racial equity within our profession. These cohorts will provide a forum in which firm leaders can frankly discuss their commitments to and the challenges in implementing strategies for racial diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their firms, the structural engineering industry, and future generations of structural engineers, over a yearlong cohort program dedicated to advancing discussions on DEI in the workplace.
Each quarter will have a topic/theme with associated goals, e.g., DEI recruiting and hiring practices, inclusive office culture, engaging employees in public service/DEI efforts, and developing DEI conscious leaders. Each cohort of 6 firm leaders will meet quarterly with our facilitator Viva Asmelash. Viva and SEAONC SE3's Racial Equity task group will provide monthly discussion guides tailored for this cohort program.

SEAONC SE3 2021 Long-Term Mentorship Program: Mid-Year Event

Description: The Mentorship task group held a virtual mid-year event for all program participants. The goal of the event was to meet others in the program, discuss strategies to make the most of the mentorship opportunities, and have fun by encouraging a casual evening of interactive discussion. The event began with a few program participants sharing unique insights about what has made their group discussions and logistics successful. Then there were two interactive breakout sessions in a “workshop” style where attendees were matched with a few participants from other groups in order to meet others in the program and discuss how to make their mentorship groups as productive as possible.

SEAONC SE3 January 2021 Bi-Monthly Racial Equity Book Club Meeting: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

SEAONC SE3 2020 Firm Leader DEI Roundtable: Driving Innovation through DEI Strategies

Description: As outlined in SEAONC SE3’s call to action, we are committed to equipping our membership for and facilitating the difficult but necessary conversations on racial equity within our profession. This firm leader roundtable will provide a forum in which Northern California firm leaders can frankly discuss their commitments to and the challenges in implementing strategies for racial diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the structural engineering industry. This roundtable was jointly presented by SEAONC SE3, SEAONC Business Forum and the SEAONC Board of Directors.

Description: SEAONC SE3 Speed Mentorship went virtual for the first time, trading physical conference spaces for Zoom breakout rooms. Over a brisk series of three Q&A sessions, participants engaged with structural engineering mentors throughout the Bay Area. It was an impressive turnout: 11 mentors and 43 participants who ranged from students to mid-level engineers.

Description: 2019-2020 SEAONC SE3 Co-Chairs Brenna Marcoux and Rachel Cohen moderated a webinar-format panel discussion on “lessons learned” from the 2008 recession. Our panelists feature SEAONC members who were at different points in their career during the last major economic downturn in the Bay Area - from entry level to Principal -  and experienced a range of impacts on their work situations. Panelists will share stories and answer questions that are particularly relevant now, as we face the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the current reality of the global pandemic is in many ways unprecedented, SE3 hopes that sharing the past experiences of our community can provide help and comfort to those who have found their careers impacted, or are dealing with the uncertainty of how things will change moving forward.

SEAONC SE3 2020 A/E/C Roundtable: Inclusive Practices in Recruiting and Management

Description: This roundtable discussion focused on recruitment and management strategies that help attract and support a diverse staff. The panel consisted of firm leaders, HR/recruiting managers, and professionals from structural engineering, architecture, and general contracting firms, who shared their experiences implementing strategies or programs to diversify their staff and improve their workplace culture and retention metrics.​
