During the Council of American Structural Engineers (CASE) winter planning meeting, the SE3 committee was invited to participate in their kick-off event. CASE is affiliated with the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and represents structural engineering firms with an emphasis on best business practices.
The two-hour event was presided over by NCSEA SE3 committee member Sabrina Duk who presented the 2018 Survey Results and led a round table discussion. The event was held on February 7th, 2019 in Tampa, Florida. Approximately twenty (20) members of various committees, largely senior engineers, principals and firm leadersfrom all over the country, were in attendance. The presentation lasted for twenty (20) minutes and was followed by a round table discussion that lasted roughly ninety (90) minutes.

The presentation was well-received by the CASE committee members who actively engaged during the Q&A portion of the event. The feedback was largely positive with a general consensus that the bi-annual survey needs to reach a larger audience. Only five (5) of the CASE members confirmed completing the most recent survey. Based on the 2018 results, none of the respondents indicated they received the survey through an ACEC/CASE communique.
The SE3 committee believes that working together with ACEC/CASE, a wider distribution of respondents can be reached through their organization.
As the round table discussion dug into the survey findings, the CASE members provided valuable insight which will help improve the upcoming 2020 survey. Specifically, the members were interested in respondents, defined as entry level staff, who had zero-to-five (0 to 5) years of experience. In the latest survey, only twelve percent (12%) of the respondents identified themselves in this category. Furthermore, this particular group has the highest percentage of engineers who consider leaving the profession. The CASE members recommended adding targeted questions, in addition, to having a targeted campaign to increase the number of respondents in this category.
We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to share the on-going efforts of the SE3 committee with the leaders of CASE. We hope there will be a continued dialogue and opportunities for collaboration in the future.
